Companies Collaborate to Promote Nutrition, Health & Wellness
among Club Members and Community at Large
GLENDALE, Calif. (April 14, 2014)Nestlé USA, under its El Mejor Nido (“The Best Nest”) platform, and Superior Grocers today announced the launch of a campaign specifically designed to help families in the Los Angeles metro area prepare and enjoy healthier, balanced meals at home. As part of the campaign, 10 local chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America will also receive a total of $50,000 in donations to help strengthen their efforts to provide nutrition education to its members.
From April through December 2014, consumers will see English- and Spanish-language communications about creating easy and affordable balanced meals inside 41 Superior Grocers stores throughout Los Angeles. These include multi-brand displays, valuable instant- and mail-in-rebate coupons, flyers with easy-to-prepare meal ideas and recipes, and more. Some of the helpful tips featured in the in-store communications include:
   Round Out Frozen Entrees. Frozen prepared meals are time-savers and can be a part of an overall healthful diet, if they’re served with a side salad, whole wheat bread, a serving of fruit, and/or a glass of milk. Nestlé offers a variety of nutritious products the whole family can enjoy like STOUFFER’S® Lasagna, DIGIORNO® RISING CRUST® Pizza and HOT POCKETS® brand sandwiches.
   Buy Ripe Produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to a healthy diet. Consult the grocery store’s ads, like Superior Grocer’s circular, to check what produce is on sale, as this means it’s at its ripest stage and will likely be the most nutritious – and flavorful. Because ripe produce won’t last long at home, make sure to eat it quickly, or clean, cut them up and freeze them in plastic bags for future use.
   Buy Whole Chickens. Chicken is a good, lean protein for soups, enchiladas or grilling. To save money, buy whole chickens and cut them up yourself, instead of buying pre-packaged chicken pieces.
   Choose Frozen Fruit Instead of Canned. If you’re craving out-of-season fruit, opt for buying bags of frozen fruit vs. cans, which are typically high in sugar. If you still want a touch of sweetness, drizzle some NESTLÉ® LA LECHERA® Fat-Free Sweetened Condensed Milk on top of the thawed fruit.

As part of the “Set the Table” program, 10 Boys & Girls Clubs in the Greater Los Angeles area will receive monetary donations totaling $50,000 to aid in their efforts to educate their members on healthy eating habits. Additionally, Nestlé USA and Superior Grocers will sponsor dinner events at select clubs where families will enjoy a complimentary healthy meal together, receive cost- and time-effective tips on how to prepare a balanced meal at home, participate in raffles and more.

I am always looking for smart innovative ways for schools and youth programs ot raise money to keep going. I came across this idea a little while back and have blogged about it before but look what they are doing in Canada.

Canadian Citizen Groups Join USA Private Sector Funding Movement to Strengthen Opportunity for Canada’s Youth
Youth in Canada will now have more opportunity thanks to a new private sector alliance between a group of independent Canadian business owners and Pomeroy Equitable Solutions LLC (PES), a US based company that created the youth funding movement Swipe4TheKids
The goal of this International alliance is to redistribute credit and debit card bank processing fees to help fund Canadian youth initiatives, which is a high priority in all Canadian Provinces. Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, recognizes the importance of investing in our youth: “Through BC Creative Futures strategy, we are annually investing $6.25 million in programs that foster a creative workforce by providing arts opportunities to young British Columbians. I encourage you to continue working in partnership with British Columbia’s business community to further develop Swipe4TheKids in the province,” encouraged Oakes.
Patrick Schmied and and Ashvin Abraham, Brand Ambassadors for Swipe4TheKids in Canada, have helped lead the charge in Vancouver: “The Canadian Business sector has been extremely receptive to the program and progress has developed sooner than expected. I am excited to be a part of such a unique and fresh model for social sustainability. The moment I heard about Swipe4TheKids, I knew this was meant for Canada’s future.”
Canadian early adopters of Swipe4TheKids include an eclectic mix of supporters, well-established independent businesses and affiliated youth programs spread out over several Provinces and Territories.  One participant is George Chronoupolos, Managing Director of Royal Riviera Mens & Ladies Salon. Amesbury Middle School in Toronto is serving as a pilot program, where funds from participating merchants will help Brooke’s Longboarding For Peace expand into schools all across the Country.
Other participants and affiliates include: Canadian-based Cackleberrie’s Connection, North American Distributor of Cackleberries On-Line Children’s Education system; Dr. George Mueck and The Mueck Group; Mel Zajak of Zajack Ranch for Children; Glendale Automotive in Ancaster; and Spendit.com in Vancouver. Additionally, Hastings Crossings Business Improvement Association (HXBIA) has recently introduced this revolutionary program to its business community. Finally, conversations are progressing quite smoothly with several major Canadian Business groups initiated by brand representative Patrick Shmied at the urging of Premier Clark’s Office.
Mike Boccio, New York Attorney and ex-Managing Director of The Trump Organization, helped launch the program and acts as Special Advisor to PES. Prehistoric Pets In My Backyard

Just when you think that you’ve seen it all, you realize there are so many things in your own backyard that have gone by unseen.  FYI…  amongst the other weird creatures, there are dinosaurs in Orange County CA. 

Well.. Kind of…  However, what I did see on my first visit to Prehistoric Pets was absolutely mind blowing.  It was much different than a trip to your typical pet store.  The look was different, the smell was quite different and there were no dogs, no cats, no birds, no hamsters, zip nada.
When I walked in the door I was greeted by Twinkie, a 350 pound, 22-feet-long albino reticulated python. who happens to the biggest in the world.  Really? A 350 pound snake? Oh my!
Twinkie is actually like a rockstar and has made some pretty special appearances along with his side-kick Jay. 

While Twinkie was the first creature that I saw, there was sooooooo much more to see in this 10,000 square foot facility, that went on and on.  It just seemed to keep going…..

With an entry fee of only $10 it is definitely an adventure we’d highly recommend!
I was fortunate enough to get a grand tour from the owner himself, Jay Brewer, who’s passion for the reptiles and snakes is quite obvious.   Now in his twenty-seventh year, what Jay started  in 1988 has evolved into Orange County’s most Jurassic experience.  The Reptile Zoo!

To tell you the truth… with all the families and happy kids engaging with the animals, it was like a small adventure, or a  trip to a helluva of a petting zoo. 

With a goal of educating the public, Jay and his Jurassic crew are constantly entertaining both in-store as well as on the road.  In addition to the constant flow of their private Jurassic Parties  of the best kind, the request for private engagements come from all across the globe.

OK…  Now that the kiddie stuff is out of the way, let’s talk about exotics…  
For the hardcore reptile enthusiasts,  rare breeds and even more so. one -of-a–kind pets are in high demand. 
This is where things get really interesting… 

Prehistoric Pets specializes in genetics.  Through a fairly sophisticated process of mix-mating and cross-breeding, they are able to genetically create one -of-a-kind snakes.  Jay breeds approximately 2700 snakes a year and creates some of  the most unique  snakes on the planet.

In closing,  I want to say this.. From what I witnessed and learned on my visit. Prehistoric Inc. is a corporation that cares about kids and cares about community.  They continuously show their support and share a really fun educational experience with you and your kids . Emergency Thanksgiving Survival Mode

Mamaliscious and myself are closer to this situation than you realize.  These are our friends, their families and their immediate community.  Imagine…


They are only asking for a Thanksgiving Dinner for their little Hurricane Sandy stricken community.  Not much to ask is it?   We’ve got a Real Army of Moms.  Let’s do this!

Long Beach Devastated By Sandy, Surf Community Comes Together For Thanksgiving Survival
The coastal communities, in the Northeast were devastated by Hurricane Sandy and Long Beach NY was one of the worst hit. While FEMA and state efforts continue, surfers take matters into their own hands.
As many of you are aware Long Beach, NY, was devastated.  Many people have lost everything they own and are still without power, heat and hot water. There is, however, one thing that Hurricane Sandy didn’t count on when she set out to destroy this little seaside town. Community!  Long beach is a surf community like no other, and when times are bad it “comes together”. 

Swingbellys BBQ, Skudin Surf, Surfforall.org and the LBSA put forth this emergency relief effort in order to restore happyThanksgiving Dinners for at least one hundred families in Long Beach NY. 

LBSA Board Member Billy Kupferman says, “Long Beach was hit hard.  The city is devastated… but we are strong.  I have never seen people come together like this in my life.  There is such a sense of community. Sean is a hero.  Straight up.  His restaurant was destroyed but his main concern is the people of this town and making sure they don’t miss Thanksgiving.  The LBSA is 100% behind his effort and proud to be on board. Having help from people like Mike and Peter is incredible.  They are going above and beyond for the people here.  I feel so blessed to have all these people in my life”. 

“Immediately prior to Sandy, I was working closely with Cliff Skudin and Billy Kupferman in order to integrate the Swipe4theKids merchant platform into the Long Beach community to help school programs.  However, once Sandy hit, the plan was placed on hold and all involved went into emergency assistance mode. With Thanksgiving approaching, I quickly refocused my efforts in order to help their cause”, stated Mike Boccio, Swipe4TheKids special advisor. 

Skudin Surf and Surf for All are honored to be able to service our community in anyway that is needed during the next several months of rebuilding through clothing drives, providing warm food and shelter, raising funds to restore community property, and working together to lift the spirits    of those devastated by this disaster”. Cliff Skudin and Will Skudin of Skudin Surf added.

Got Scissors? Got Tip!

This may seem a little off the wall but….   You never know when you are gonna need a good pair of scissors.  Not necessarily even a good pair.  Just cheap folding scissors.

I am not promoting a brand or anything.  This was brought to my attention by a friend.  That happens to  be a Father and the son of Judy Haas Bingham, who will be officially guest blogging with us. She’s got a ton of poetry, and some wonderful children’s stories that she’d like to share with you.

OK… Now that we have some clarification, back to that pair of scissors.

Good for everything … You know when someone offers you a drink of their smoothie, and it looks so good, and you really want to.  But…. you think to yourself.  Geez!  Who knows where that mouth has been. Then you reply.  “Oh…  No thanks, I am really trying to cut down”.   Picture this. Being able to pull these babies out of your purse, and nonchalantly snip off a half inch or so of the straw,  and gladly take a slurp of that cold, fruity beverage.  That’s what I’d do.  Minus the purse of course.

The bottom line is… You might want to keep one in your  purse or diaper bag, because you never know when your gonna have to cut something, that a simple knife can’t cut.
